Introducing Alva’s Product Selector: Find the Perfect Electric Motor for Your Needs

February 13, 2025

At Alva Industries, we are committed to making it easier than ever for you to find the right electric motor solution for your applications. That’s why we’re excited to introduce our new Product Selector tool, now available on our website. Our Product Selector streamlines the process of selecting the perfect frameless motor to meet your specific requirements.

Why Use Alva's Product Selector?

Finding the right electric motor can be a complex task, especially when you have precise technical requirements or do not want to spend time reading complicated data sheets. Our Product Selector simplifies this process by allowing you to input your criteria and quickly identify the motors that match your needs. It saves you time, reduces guesswork, and ensures you get the most reliable and efficient motor for your application.
We understand that selecting a motor often involves trade-offs. That’s why our tool allows you to modify your conditions and see how changes affect your selection.

How Does It Work? What do I need to know?

Using the Product Selector is simple and intuitive. Just enter your data into the form to get the desired results. We know that sometimes you may not have all the necessary data, so you can input what you do know and refine your selection later for a more productive discussion with our sales team.
Follow these easy steps to get started:

1. Input Your Requirements

Begin by entering the key specifications for your motor:

Mechanical Aspects:

  1. Maximum Outer Diameter: Define the maximum allowable diameter for your application (e.g., 80 mm). This size is typically limited by the overall size of your device or by other mechanisms within your machine.
  2. Maximum Axial Length: Specify the maximum motor length your application can accommodate (e.g., 30 mm). Alva motors do not have winding overhangs, but be sure to check the CAD files available on our website.
  3. Minimum Internal Diameter: Define the minimum internal diameter required for your motor (e.g., 50 mm). Alva’s standard motors are in-runners, but if you need an out-runner, consult our sales team.
  4. Max Weight: Specify the maximum allowable weight of the motor (e.g., 800 g). This weight applies to the active part of the motor (i.e., the rotor and stator). If your application is sensitive to high weights, Alva motors can be modified to meet even the most challenging requirements.

Electrical Aspects (Drive)

  1. Supply Voltage: Specify the required voltage (e.g., 48 V). Our motors support up to 72 V. Changing this value will affect results, particularly speed, so be sure to experiment with different values.
  2. Max Continuous Current: Enter the continuous current your drive can provide in amperes. If you haven't determined this yet, you can leave it blank for now.
  3. Max Peak Current (3s): Specify the peak current your drive can provide for three seconds in amperes. If this information is not yet available, leave it blank.

Performance Aspects:

  1. Minimum Motor Constant: This value measures how efficiently electrical energy is converted into mechanical energy. More advanced motor users may calculate this value, but if you’re unsure, it can be left blank. If you’re comparing Alva motors with others, this value is especially useful, particularly in relation to motor weight.
  2. Maximum Allowed Temperature: Define the maximum operating temperature in °C. This is crucial for temperature-sensitive applications. Adjusting this value will impact motor performance, but keep in mind that some heat will dissipate through housing and other system components.
  3. Continuous Torque: Specify the required continuous torque (e.g., 0.5 Nm). Continuous torque is strongly influenced by thermal conditions. If you are unsure, consult our application engineers. If you need help calculating the required torque, reach out to us!
  4. Cooling Condition: Your application's cooling conditions will significantly impact continuous torque. Choose from:
    • Low: No housing, 0 m/s airflow, 25°C ambient temperature
    • Mid: Housing without fins, 5 m/s airflow, 25°C ambient temperature
    • High: Housing with fins, 15 m/s airflow, 25°C ambient temperature
  5. Peak Torque: Define your peak torque requirements in Nm (e.g., 2 Nm). This is the maximum torque required for three seconds. Alva’s technology allows for higher peak torque than other motor technologies, so contact us if you need even higher values.
  6. Minimum Speed at Continuous Torque: Specify the speed in rpm required when applying the defined continuous torque.
  7. No-Load Speed: Enter the desired speed in rpm when the motor is running without a load.

If you are unsure about your input data and would like us to verify your calculations, do not hesitate to contact our Applications Engineering team. We’re here to help!
